Namaskaram, A Happy New Year to You
Ugadi is celebrated in different ways in different states of India, but the essence of the festival remains the same - to mark the beginning of a new year and to celebrate the arrival of spring. Here are some of the ways Ugadi is celebrated in major 5 states:
Andhra Pradesh and Telangana: Ugadi is a major festival in these states, and is celebrated with great enthusiasm. People clean their homes, decorate them with mango leaves and flowers, and draw colorful patterns called "rangolis" on the floor. They also prepare a special dish called "Ugadi pachadi" which is made from six different ingredients, each representing a different emotion. Ugadi is also a time for people to wear new clothes, visit temples, and exchange gifts.
Karnataka: In Karnataka, Ugadi is known as "Yugadi". People decorate their homes with fresh mango leaves and flowers, and prepare a special dish called "holige" or "obbattu", which is a sweet flatbread filled with jaggery and coconut. Ugadi is also a time for people to visit temples and seek blessings from the Gods.
Maharashtra: In Maharashtra, Ugadi is celebrated as "Gudi Padwa". People erect a "gudi" or a flag-like structure outside their homes, which is made from a bamboo stick, a colorful cloth, and a copper pot. They also prepare a special dish called "puran poli", which is a sweet flatbread filled with jaggery and lentils. Ugadi is also a time for people to wear new clothes and visit temples.
Tamil Nadu: In Tamil Nadu, Ugadi is known as "Puthandu". People clean their homes, decorate them with mango leaves and flowers, and prepare a special dish called "mango pachadi", which is a sweet and sour chutney made from raw mangoes, jaggery, and neem flowers. Ugadi is also a time for people to wear new clothes and visit temples.
Kerala: In Kerala, Ugadi is known as "Vishu". People clean their homes, decorate them with flowers, and prepare a special dish called "vishu kanji", which is a sweet porridge made from rice, coconut milk, and jaggery. Ugadi is also a time for people to wear new clothes, visit temples, and light lamps in their homes.
Happy New Year and Happy Yugadi. We follow rituals such as an oil bath, consumption of neem leaves with Jaggery on Yugadi🙏
